2001 - Return to Grandeur: The Tale of the Lost City of Gold;
The music of Samuel Barber
The Victor Performance Ensemble' program for the 2001 season is
Return to Grandeur: The Tale of the Lost City of Gold, with
music from Samuel Barber' Medea: Dance of Vengeance.
This year's program is based on the legendary city of gold, a religious
Mecca of the ancient Aztec nation and its destruction by a European
expedition in the early 15th century.
The legend claims that once there was an ancient city whose riches
were so vast that their very walls were made of gold.
The religious city had only one protection. It was completely hidden
from the rest of the world.
Legends of the city and its riches made their way across the Atlantic
to Europe during the height of exploration.
An expedition set out from Europe to find this legendary city in
the 15th century. The expedition found the city attacked it, destroying
everything in its path, stealing all of its riches and murdering
its defenseless people.
On its return, the ships and all of the riches mysteriously disappeared
in an area of the Atlantic now known as the Bermuda Triangle.
Victor will be living through the event as members of the ancient
city during its destruction. The program is a reenactment of the
events with one major twist, they will be traveling backwards through
time, taking you from the city in its ruin and returning it to its
original grandeur.
